Like many people out there, I am looking for a job and after several months of unsuccessfully job applications, I decided that few hundred dollars paid to a professional resume writer could pay bigger dividends and land me few interviews. I searched the internet and decided to go with CareersPlusResumes.com which was by no mean amongst the cheapest options.
They have a great website and listed the Wall Street Journal as one of their partners, so I thought that it was a legitimate professional company and decided to buy a $149.90 package for: One-on-one consultation+ Resume writing + Cover letter. They promise you a 24-48 hours turnaround time, so I was expecting to get a call from the consultant to discuss my background and my career expectation, but I was shocked to receive a resume after a 2-day wait which had exactly the same wordings and text as my old resume that I had e-mailed them initially. The only difference was on the executive summary and the format. When I raised the issue, the gentlemen called Kevin (this person seems to be the only guy running this so called business-a scam- because he is the person that you will always get on the phone when you are so lucky to get through any of the numbers listed on their website) tells me that my job experience is always the same and cannot be changed from my former resume. My point is that my old 2 page resume does not capture the full depth and breath of my work experience and I paid for this service because I thought that a one-on-one interview with a consultant would enable him to understand my profile and how to market it better in a new resume:I did not pay $149.99 for something that I could easily have done myself.
Anyway they have taken my money and sent me nothing but my very same old resume and worst I still do not received the cover letter that was suppose to come with it.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this scam… I wish somebody had warned me before I used them. |

Many problems in Korea stem from the suffocating social pressure to be perfect. Getting an 850 on the TOEIC is very hard if you never even lived in an English speaking country, But this means nothing, Because some other person got a 950. because (Depressingly) Hilarious part is that even those who do get perfect scores in every aspect, And do graduate from Seoul nationwide, And do get hired at some big company like Samsung, Still usually end up in a job where they work their asses off constantly every day each week with little rest. The only difference is they have more money. Putting money as actually goal does not a happy society make.
This is what leads to suicidal high school students that come home from hakwon at 12am. Men who come home at 2am completely drunk out of the minds of men. the woman, Many of whom spend a full day working too, Just to come home and look after the her husband demanding parents who expect them to keep a perfect household. Of course that gets into the next difficulty which is people treating everyone below them badly. It quite normal to see bosses who treat employees like their personal slaves, tutors who treat their students like their personal slaves, etc,or anything else etc,or anything else.
On top of worrying if you good, Koreans also need to worry if they normal enough. Koreans expect that everybody else will and should act just like they do personally. cause being foreign in Korea is already kind of a sin it itself. As a foreigner I heard Koreans often make claims that contradict each other, Prefacing each one along with your way it is here in Korea. when they see someone doing something in public that goes against their personal moral code, They attribute it not to discrepancy in price of opinion, But or even insanity in your lover. Instead of tackling these differences situational, They argue over who opinion is more widely held by other people and thus common law. So yeah these are the basic reasons, Along with many others, That I don think I can keep living in Korea much longer. I originally intended to, As I really loved my life here the first period, (where there still things I love about Korea ofc) But seeing so many sad worn down people around me has truly taken the joy out of Korean life. Doesn help that receiving treatment as an outsider forever sucks. If explore Korean, No amount of Korean fluency or cultural knowledge makes you actually an other.
